Glasgow Airport security staff are taking steps closer to industrial action, and this could severely impact summer travel plans in Scotland and beyond. On 30 April 2026, Scotland’s largest aviation union, Unite, announced that some 170 ICTS central search staff at Glasgow Airport are being formally balloted for industrial action – a response to a dispute over pay with their employer.
The ballot for strike action will run from 1-21 May 2026. The Glasgow Airport security workers in question are not “non-essential” workers. They are the workers responsible for passenger screening, mobile patrols, access control, processing all the goods delivered to the airport, and liaising with emergency services. As Unite industrial officer Carrie Donoghue said: “You can’t run an airport without them”.
Their critical role means the threat of union action by airport staff in Scotland looms large. A “yes” vote in the Glasgow Airport security ballot would likely result in extensive flight delays at Glasgow Airport, with repercussions for the UK airspace.
Underpinning the threat of an airport security staff strike in the UK is what Unite calls a “paltry” pay offer from ICTS, the airport security provider. The union cites the company’s financial performance as evidence that there is more to be had – ICTS (UK) Limited had profits of £7.6 million in 2015, a significant increase from £4.4 million in 2014.
Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham left no doubt: “ICTS is a profitable company that can afford to offer a fair pay deal. The company’s cavalier attitude… has created this dispute.” The union has vowed to support its members every step along the way in the quest for decent pay and conditions.
