Despite the company having a value of $7.5 billion, it is undergoing employee layoffs because of Flock Safety in the year 2026. Some calculations suggest that about 18 percent of the firm’s 1,500 employees are being laid off. The cuts are part of a voluntary buyout programme and will be in effect by the end of October. But why does a company with a billion-dollar valuation of its business let hundreds of employees go?

What’s Behind the Flock Safety Job Cuts?
Flock Safety develops AI-powered cameras and LPRs installed in 49 states, comprising more than 120,000 instances of LPRs in use with more than 4,800 law enforcement agencies. The company has more than doubled in size in a short amount of time, but it’s now battling significant headwinds.
Growing public discontent. A recent poll indicates 47% of Americans are against Flock cameras in their community. In September, Florida enacted a new law prohibiting the use of automated licence-plate readers on state roads, due to privacy concerns. The company is also suing Virginia over its cameras, claiming that it’s not performing warrantless surveillance.
Wang’s technology has also played a key role in the 2026 midterm elections. But it’s the politics and reputational consequences that can be more insidious than the $7.5 billion valuation, and that’s the reality of the Flock Safety workforce reduction.
What This Means for Affected Workers
The 270 job losses were a result of a voluntary separation programme which was initiated in September, and in which employees were encouraged to apply if they wished to leave. Those impacted will be exiting by the end of October 2026.
Those who will be affected by these cuts should be quick to act:
- Apply for unemployment benefits as soon as you are sure you’ve been dismissed.
- Check severance agreements – those who choose to participate in the voluntary programme could have waived some rights.
- Be quick to update your LinkedIn profile and resume before the wider market knows about the cuts.
- Look for WARN Act notices – 60 days’ notice must be provided in most U.S. States in mass firings.
FAQs on Flock Safety Layoffs
What is it about Flock Safety that has them letting go of employees when they are valued at $7.5 billion?
It is the investors’ confidence that drives up the valuation, and not the operational stability. Flock Safety, a startup which specializes in livestock monitoring products, has started reducing its workforce not due to poor growth in revenues, but due to increased pressure on the sector from regulators to regulate AI, and increasing opposition from the general population and false legal claims against the technology.
How many jobs will be cut at Flock Safety in 2026?
By October 2026, about 270 workers, representing roughly 18% of the total workforce, will be affected by job cuts.
