A resolution that demands for the review of El Salvador human rights has been led by the U.S. Senate Democrats Chris Van Hollen and Tim Kaine which attracted global attention significantly on 2 May 2025. This move initiated after the controversial deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia who is a Salvadoran national removed from Maryland despite a court order that has been blocking the deportation of his.
As per the given information he is now held in El Salvador’s high-security Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), which is raising serious concerns about the due process and fair treatment. So, this resolution urges the U.S. State Department to investigate the human rights practices followed by El Salvador peculiarly the treatment of deportees and mass detentions under President Nayib Bukele’s administration.

Such actions not only are a failure but also erodes the credibility of the U.S. legal system since that deportation. Judicial defiance, diminishing democratic norms, and the need for international accountability are the crucial problems that are rising out of this incident. So, the Democrats tried to enforce the alarming risks with immediate actions that could enable authoritarian practices.
