BT Announces Closure of Londonderry Office, 140 Jobs at Risk

BT plans to close its Queens Quay office in Londonderry thus endangering the positions of about 140 individuals. A total of 95 positions belonging to the telecommunications company will move to India while selected staff may receive relocation options to work in Belfast.

The Wednesday declaration stunned both employees and their union representatives. Union representative Tracey Fussey termed the information complete surprise because it brought bleak employment prospects for her colleagues.

The CWU expressed fierce condemnation against BT’s outsourcing plan since businesses need to create British domestic jobs first instead of moving employment abroad. The employees express to Fussey their belief of being deprived of their dedication and work time without proper respect according to her report.

The trade union rejects Belfast relocation as an acceptable permanent solution for staff members who need to move. The CWU will initiate consultations with BT to resolve the expressed employee concerns.

The Economy Minister, Caoimhe Archibald, expressed deep disappointment regarding these job cuts after recent layoffs at BT operations throughout Enniskillen and Belfast. The local political figures seek outside help regarding the situation.
