The Communications Ministry of Indonesia seeks to develop a public endowment fund, which would strengthen independent journalism across the country because many media organizations are laying off workers in the industry. Chairwoman Ninik Rahayu of the Press Council gave her support to the fund initiative at a World Press Freedom Day seminar.

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria brought forward potential modifications to the Press Law about government assistance while ensuring complete editorial autonomy.
Most of the media industry faces these pressing challenges: Media companies plan to dismiss over 1,200 workers during 2023-2024 while many more employees at major news outlets risk job loss and digital platforms control 75% of national advertising revenue.
