Why Is Amazon Cutting Jobs Again?

It’s not a one-off; it’s the next in a series of staff reductions that have accumulated to a total of 30,000 people. The underpinning of it is over-hiring as a result of the pandemic: when online shopping skyrocketed during the pandemic, Amazon couldn’t help but scale up. At the time of demand normalisation, it was left with a surplus of manpower.

Amazon has been pushing its investments in artificial intelligence, AWS cloud computing and logistics automation at the expense of the Stores unit, which has been hardest hit.

Which Amazon Jobs Are Most at Risk?

  • Customer service – AI Chatbots and automated support systems have increasingly taken the place of customer service.
  • Marketplace support/selling partner services – Seller tools are increasing in self-service with fewer headcount members in the back-end.
  • Retail operations – Middle management level jobs in the Stores unit.
  • The legacy retail engineering – Legacy teams on existing systems should expect consolidation as resources move to AI – segment is under pressure for resources to be reallocated to AI.

The logistics tech and AWS technologies are still relatively safe, while the role in AI development is still holding up.

Are More Amazon Layoffs Coming?

Yes, probably in smaller waves. The restructuring of the Amazon work force will not be done just once. In view of the continuing trend of Amazon layoffs and their investment in AI technology, retail positions are even more threatened. Amazon has not hinted at a single huge layoff, however, Amazon’s usual practice of cutting down costs is unlikely to stop anytime soon.
