The All Government Employees Grand Alliance (AGEGA) and the All Government Employees Coordination Council KP (AGECC) woke up the public sector of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday with the walk-out of thousands of government employees at various offices. The AGEGA Strike Today is one of the biggest examples of mass protest by public servants in the province in recent years, with strikers holding their press outside of press clubs across the province to advocate for their salary demands, pension restoration and most importantly, “an end to what they say are unacceptable pay disparities.

What Is the AGEGA Protest About?

The AGEGA Protest is fundamentally about increasing pay inequity in government payroll. The protest leaders, including the Chairman of AGIGA KP Professor Abdul Hameed Afridi and President of Coordination Council Haji Siraj Baraki, pointed out that some groups are enjoying excessive benefits while the common people are toiling to combat inflation. This Public Sector Wage Dispute is encapsulated in the statement that was made by the speakers at the main rally outside the Peshawar Press Club: “Two systems cannot run within one state.

One of the most noted of the AGEGA Allowance Demands is a Disparity Allowance of 30%, to be paid to employees who have been underpaid for a specific period of time relative to their colleagues in other cadres and departments. This demand for Salary Disparity Allowance has been gaining momentum, particularly amongst teachers, clerical workers, Lady Health Workers, Allied Health Professionals, and judicial staff — all of whom are feeling left out of the current pay systems.

Public Offices Affected by the Government Employee Strike

The Government Employee Strike has been affecting the workings of various government bodies. Based on the AGEGA Strike Today action, the following departments and offices have reported a significant impact:

  • Educational Institutions: Teachers across Mansehra, Bajaur and Shangla province participated in a pen-down strike, stopping classes province-wide.
  • District Government Offices: Administrative services were boycotted and on strike in Shangla.
  • Public Health Departments: Allied Health Professionals and Public Health representatives were part of the Government Employee Strike (AGEGA), which impacted outpatient and field services.
  • Revenue & Clerical Departments: Clerical employees took part in the protest, and left routine documentation and public services unattended.
  • Lady Health Worker Programs: Community health outreach was stopped in several districts for the day.

Key Demands in the AGEGA News Today

The entire charter was presented during the Government Employees Allowance Protest:

  • Increase in base salaries by 100% to offset inflation
  • To close the gender pay gap, a 30% Disparity Allowance will be introduced.
  • Re-establishment of the old pension system.
  • A reversal of policies of privatisation and outsourcing.
  • Contract and ad hoc employees regularisation.
  • Increase in house rent, medical expenses, conveyance expenses, allowance, etc.
  • Increasing minimum wage from Rs40,000 to Rs70,000

What Comes Next?

The AGEGA Government Employee Strike is a multi-day strike. The leaders of the alliances have declared a national joint meeting in Islamabad on 22nd May, before the federal budget, to ensure a common strategy. If the government does not respond, a “full-fledged protest movement” will be promised after Eid al-Adha. But as frustration grows among the public and offices are already feeling the strain of the Government Employee Strike, the provincial and federal governments have a short window to reach a compromise before services become even more disrupted.

The AGEGA Protest is a clear message – the economic shocks can no longer be taken quietly by the public sector employees of Pakistan.
