World Leaders call for freedom of detained UN, NGO Staff in Yemen

The series of arbitrary detentions by the Houthi authorities has been under debate among the world leaders and human rights groups for more than a year. And the global leaders are demanding the release of the detained UN and NGO staff in Yemen. All these actions were condemned by the UN Secretary-General Antonio, and he demanded the release of those officials who are halted in the Houthi regions. The reports of Human Rights Watch and the Amnesty International Report state that detainees are being held without charges, denied legal access, and kept with no communication. All these practices clearly violate international law.

“The Houthis need to facilitate the work of humanitarian workers and the movement of aid. All countries with influence, as well as the United Nations and civil society organisations, should use all the tools at their disposal to urge the release of those…” said Niku Jafarnia, researcher of Yemen and Bahrain at Human Rights Watch.

The Houthis captured 13 UN staff and 50 workers from both international and local NGOs who were found in areas under their control in May 2024. It is followed by the second wave of captivation in January 2025, which is recorded as eight more staff members of the United Nations. As of now, only seven individuals have been released, but dozens are being held in detention. It is remarked upon as the severely disrupted humanitarian operations in a country which is already enduring the world’s most humanitarian crisis, that is Yemen. Even the aid deliveries and basic services are stalled, affecting the peaceful lives of the community.

The detention of UN and NGO personnel by Yemen’s Houthi authorities marks a grave violation of international humanitarian norms and poses a direct threat to ongoing aid efforts in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions.
