Log Angles: Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, shared his technique for maintaining a balance between his business and personal life on LinkedIn. Mr. Randolph indicated that he has adhered to a tight discipline of leaving his employment on Tuesdays at precisely 5:00 p.m. for the past thirty years.
What then does he do on Tuesday evenings? He departs early to spend the evening with his best buddy, his wife. The entrepreneur stated that he would not bend to this regulation.
He said on LinkedIn, “I’ve worked hard throughout my career to maintain a healthy work-life balance. I describe my Tuesday date nights with my wife in my book. I’ve adhered to a Tuesday deadline for almost thirty years. I departed at precisely 5 p.m. and spent the evening with my closest buddy, regardless of the weather. Together, we would go to the movies, eat supper, or just window-shop downtown.”
Mr. Randolph said that he would not entertain Tuesday evening meetings, conference calls, or last-minute queries or requests under any circumstances. Nothing prevented that from occurring. No meeting, no conference call, no last-minute inquiry or request. “Tuesday at 4:55 p.m., if you had something to say to me, you had better say it on the way to the parking lot. If there is a crisis, we will resolve it by 5:00,” he continued.
He stated that those Tuesday evenings were what kept him sane and gave him perspective on the rest of his career.
Mr. Randolph also emphasized the significance of keeping family relationships, writing, “I vowed a long time ago not to be one of those entrepreneurs on their seventh venture and seventh marriage. In reality, the thing I’m most proud of in my life is not the companies I’ve founded, but the fact that I’ve been able to do so while remaining married to the same lady, having my children grow up knowing me and (as far as I can tell) enjoying me, and being able to pursue my other hobbies. This is how I define success.”
