Can you imagine getting 60 days of sick leave in a single year? Employees of Wake County in the U.S. state of North Carolina will provide more sick leaves to the employees. Wake County employees can earn up to 60 additional sick days in a single year under a new policy.

Matt Calabria, Wake County Commissioner, approved a new plan to allow employees to earn up to 60 additional sick days. From 1 December, employees will get more sick leaves.

Matt Calabria said, “If we want to make sure that folks respond quickly to fires or law enforcement emergencies, if we want to make sure we have well-run elections, then we’ve got to make sure that we address this vacancy rate.”

Matt Calabria said that Wake County’s job vacancy rate was 11%, while the turnover rate reached 15% last year. The authorities took the decision in order to convince more people to stay in their jobs.

Who will get 60 days of sick leave?

Employees who complete five years of service in a company will be able to get 60 additional sick days in a single year. They can also get another 60 days of leave in their 10th, 15th and 20th years as well. They cannot get more than 240 sick days. Employees will enjoy great work-life balance with this new policy. 

Employees who have completed 5 years will get 60 days leave from December 1. Employees who have completed 20 years of service will get 120 days of leave over the next year.

Matt Calabria said that the county was losing employees who were younger and earlier in their careers. Matt Calabria said that the new policy would convince them to stay with the county longer.

Matt Calabria said, “We need to continue to be competitive if we’re going to recruit and retain the best possible employees.”

Ardis Watkins, executive director of the State Employees Association of North Carolina, lauded Wake County’s sick leave policy.

California workers will also get five days sick leave instead of three. Gavin Christopher Newsom, the governor of California, signed a new law to increase the days of paid sick leave for all the workers. The new law for the workers will take effect in January 2024.
