The United States has declared that it would impose visa restrictions on owners, executives, and senior officials of India-based travel agencies which had reportedly instructed individuals to illegally migrate to the U.S. The United States stated that its actions were based upon information received from its diplomatic post in India, and another action was taken against illegal migration in a significant enforcement action. On Monday The U.S. State Department stated its actions were based on evidence from its diplomatic service based on the ground in India.

While the total number and specific identities of persons affected are not currently public, the visa bans are being applied under the Immigration and Nationality Act. “We will continue to take steps, as appropriate, to impose visa restrictions against the owners, executives and senior officials of travel agencies to disrupt alien smuggling networks,” said Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
The new policy also falls in line with the Trump administration’s overall campaign to strengthen immigration control and discourage undocumented immigration. The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi noted its aggressive efforts to identify and dismantle human smuggling and trafficking operations operating throughout its consular network in India.
This policy applies globally, and also extends to those eligible under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. Recently, the embassy issued another warning to Indian nationals of overstaying their authorized time in the U.S., indicating deportation and a permanent entry ban may result.
Since 2009, a total of over 15,000 unlawful Indian immigrants have been deported from the United States, with 2,042 deported in 2019 being the highest in the last decade. The visa ban highlights U.S. enforcement of immigration laws and the responsibility of third parties who enable illegal migration.
