UN Condemns Russia’s Illegal Actions in Ukraine

The UN’s top political affairs official, Rosemary DiCarlo, addressed the Security Council, condemning Russia’s ongoing elections in illegally occupied parts of Ukraine. The Under-Secretary-General underscored the illegal annexation attempts by Russia in Crimea, Sevastopol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. Humanitarian Crisis Escalation 

DiCarlo highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Ukraine, exacerbated by intensified aerial assaults by Russian forces. She cited a recent report by the Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, revealing widespread and systematic torture of civilians by Russian authorities.

The UN official stressed the importance of holding perpetrators of human rights violations accountable. She urged the Russian Federation to facilitate access to all detainees and emphasized the need to record and document such cases.

DiCarlo emphasized the urgent need for peace, especially as the conflict enters its third year. She highlighted the disproportionate impact of the war on Ukrainian women, who constitute the majority of displaced persons.
