Spain has formally ended his two-year long national experiment on shorter working hours, which has provided the world labor market with a groundbreaking verdict. The Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism released the final report today, confirming that participating Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) experienced an average 15% productivity boost after adopting the truncated schedule. The pilot, started in 2024, with an initial government support of 10 million euros to cover the transition costs, explored the data of more than 200 companies. The results break the traditionally held assumption that shorter hours are equal to less output, instead demonstrating the efficiency and concentration of compressed schedules.
The detailed report illustrates that the Spain Pilot Results were driven by the elimination of “presenteeism” and the adoption of digital optimization tools. According to the reports of companies, there was a reduction in the total hours, but the intensity of work in the active hours remained, or even increased, which did not lower the revenues in comparison with the period before the pandemic. The government has cited these figures as a “green light” for potential legislative shifts, suggesting that the productivity boost is sustainable long-term without state subsidies.

Beyond economics, the 32-hour week demonstrated profound social impacts. The information revealed that the level of burnout in the employees decreased by a factor of 28% and sick leave also decreased by a great margin. Moreover, commuting days were also reduced which added to a quantifiable drop in urban nitrogen dioxide emissions, fitting labor reform to the climate goals of Spain.
