some maryland companies could convert to a four day work week under new state bill
The Maryland General Assembly and its new bill are suggesting a change to the four-day work week by various companies.
If the bill gets passed, the Four-Day Work Week Act of 2023 would create a pilot program. The aim of this pilot program is to encourage companies to reduce the weekly hours of their employees from 40 to 32. But the benefits and pay should be the same as for 40 hours.
The lead sponsor of the act Del. Vaughn Stewart in the state’s House of Delegates that “What the bill represents is a real opportunity for a win-win situation,” They also said they could make their lives richer and more fulfilling for Maryland employees by giving them eight hours off their workday and more time off from their vacation, while at the same time, without hurting companies’ bottom lines.
The program will be administered by the Maryland Department of Labor. It will happen between 1st July to 30 June , 2028.
Public and private companies will be credited while participating in the program but companies must have at least 30 employees to participate in the pilot move.
Data will also be collected by the labor department from the companies about the results of the programme.
A Democrat from Montgomery County- Stewart, was inspired to push the bill after a study by 4 Day Week Global. It is an organization dedicated to researching and advancing the idea of the four-day work week culture.
The organization showed a report of 27 companies that participated in a four-day workweek pilot program, they said that 96.9 percent of employees wanted to continue the trial. “too positive” was the rating the workers gave to it.
Although UAE and 4-day work culture is in some areas, and many US territories are ready to follow suit.
So, in short, According to CNN, a bill has been introduced in Maryland that would provide financial incentives to companies that strive for a four-day work week – the U.S. This is likely to be the first bill of its kind.
