Saudi Arabia tightens work visa rules for Indian workers

Saudi Arabia has introduced major changes to its work visa rules for Indian workers. Effective from January 14, 2025, the new rules require Indian applicants to complete a pre-verification process for their professional and educational qualifications before applying for a work visa. The new rules will create new challenges for Indians seeking employment in the Gulf country.

Currently, more than 2.4 million Indian workers are present in Saudi Arabia, making up the second-largest expatriate group in the Gulf nation, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The new measures are aimed at enhancing quality control and labor standards under the country’s Vision 2030 initiatives.

Under the Vision 2030 initiative, Saudi Arabia aims to diversify the economy and reduce dependency on foreign labor.

The pre-verification process was proposed six months ago, as per reports, with the aim of controlling the number of incoming labor, tackling the limited capacity of training centers, and improving professional standards in the labor market.

The new pre-verification process requires workers to validate professional qualifications through authorized agencies, submit educational certificates for authentication and comply with job-specific requirements outlined by Saudi authorities.

As Saudi Arabia is tightening its regulations to prioritize skilled labor, the Gulf labor market is emphasizing quality and authenticity in foreign employment, as per current trends.
