San Diego migrant shelter closes as Donald Trump administration brings major changes
Because of funding and policy changes under the Donald Trump administration, a San Diego migrant shelter has closed its doors and is also laying off more than 100 employees. The shelter had been in operation for multiple years.
The NGO operating the migrant shelter said it had not got any asylum-seeking families or persons since the CBP One app lost its functioning on January 20. The app had initially been created to help schedule cargo inspections.
The CBP One app expanded in 2023 to help migrants make an appointment at the port of entry to be let into the US. Since May last year, they had the potential to be paroled into the country as part of the Joe Biden administration’s expansion policies.
More than 936,500 people had made appointments to be paroled through the app as of the end of December, according to Customs and Border Protection. But migrant shelters that helped nearly a thousand asylum seekers per day are almost empty today.
