Last updated on March 6th, 2023 at 04:26 am

Located in the small town of Pella, Iowa, Pella Corporation is leading the charge for employee wellness initiatives. With 10,000 workers, the legacy brand recognizes that boosting morale and productivity starts with creating an engaging work environment. This strategy has paid off, as the company has earned a spot on Fast Company’s prestigious list of World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2023. Their approach to wellness initiatives is inspiring other businesses to recognize the importance of workplace satisfaction for their employees.

Nicolle Picray, Senior Manager of Public Relations and Talent Brand Communications for Pella, expressed her pride in being ranked as one of the most innovative companies in manufacturing. “This recognition is a testament to the combined efforts of our team to innovate across all aspects of our organization, from product to process, and our commitment to pursuing a better way for each other and our customers.”

Last year, Pella introduced innovations in robotics, voice-directed work, and flexible scheduling in order to meet the changing needs of the manufacturing workforce. These efforts are aimed at improving both inside and outside the workplace the well-being of team members.

By creating more flexible schedules, the company improved consistency in overtime requirements, time off, and work-life balance by turning traditional scheduling techniques on their heads. With the change, long-time employees were able to scale back their hours while retaining full benefits, which improved employee retention by over 50%. As a result of the flexible schedules, Pella’s manufacturing workforce increased by 45% over the past two years, attracting more talent.

Pella set out to decrease complexity and repetition on the manufacturing floor by introducing custom robotics that decrease cognitive strain and make decision-making easier. As an example, employees who used to manually sand wood window frames were given equal or better pay for less physically arduous roles. Additionally, voice-directed picking was brought in leading to a 90% reduction in training time, maximized performance and decreased employee stress.

Picray added, “We believe we are well-positioned for the future by taking a holistic, innovative approach to the workplace environment while remaining steadfast in our commitment to wellness in the workplace.
