Oracle Layoffs Hit Indian Campuses: What Students Can Do If a Job Offer Is Withdrawn

The Oracle has started to make cuts to India’s top engineering colleges, affecting hundreds of final-year students. The placement cells across the country report that Oracle has withdrawn offers of full-time jobs and internships from students at IITs, NITs, BITS, Pilani, and many of the tier-2 and tier-3 college campuses, as part of its global restructuring programme that resulted in the loss of 20,000 to 30,000 positions globally.

What Happened: Oracle’s Campus Hiring Freeze

The Oracle layoffs in India have been felt in some of the most competitive campus environments in India. The students of IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT BHU, IIT Roorkee, NIT Warangal, MNNIT Allahabad, RV College of Engineering, VNIT Nagpur and also of the Punjab Engineering College are affected. The total number of students who have received offer withdrawal emails is more than 50–70 in top institutions, and probably more in smaller colleges.

For several students, the Oracle invitation to join came as a relief after months of waiting; they had decided to forgo the other rounds of placement and believed that the job at a top global technology firm was guaranteed. Rejection isn’t the pain; it’s the timing, as one final year student of RV College of Engineering explained.

It can be said that the IT sector recruitment industry of India in 2026 is witnessing a change in its approach, with fewer recruitment drives from campus and low recruitment ratios being seen among big IT organisations that prefer specialised domains such as AI and automation technology.

Problem Related to “One Student One Job” Policy

There are many institutions that have implemented a cancellation of recruitment drives when faced with a crisis. The “one student, one job” principle is followed, and students who accept a job offer from the major recruiter are not allowed to take part in additional placement rounds. This puts the people who were affected by Oracle layoffs in a no-man’s land, with nowhere else to turn to for alternatives.

Placement coordinators have pointed out that this is a systemic issue that institutions need to seriously look into, as more tech companies are laying off Indians, and the software job uncertainty in India has heightened.

What Students Can Do Now

If your offer has been rejected, here are some steps you can take:

1. Kindly contact your placement cell immediately. Try getting your situation regarded as “unplaced” for advancement to the next round. In view of your situation, many institutions have made exceptions.

2. Maintain frequent contact with firms that are hiring new employees. While it may happen that downsizing takes place in the IT industry in 2026, there are still many other sectors where jobs can be available. Some areas in which one could get an opportunity include fintech, health tech, startups, and government-sponsored technology. LinkedIn, Instahyre, and Naukri are a few such recruitment sites with available openings.

3. Upgrade yourself intelligently. With slower hiring practices currently being witnessed by Oracle, the industry now requires individuals with expertise in AI, cloud computing, and data engineering. If one enrols in courses related to the above technologies via Coursera and Udemy, their prospects of getting hired will be increased manifold.

4. Explore off-campus hiring options. Many organisations do not restrict themselves to only hiring through campus placements; hence, one can easily bypass the limitations of any season.

5. Build a portfolio. Contributions to open source projects, personal projects and internships (paid or unpaid) can be considered proof of skills, even without a brand-name offer letter.

A Broader Warning for Freshers

Issues like these are not likely to be singular when it comes to engineering students’ placement. The Oracle job cuts serve as a warning that terms of employment on campus are no longer guaranteed, even in the case of a job that is already signed. Security and stability are now a necessity for freshers, and they can’t wait for one job to come through.

Even institutions have to change — in this instance, by softening their placement policies, introducing clauses in the jobs for the employers to shoulder the responsibility of placement, or by strengthening their alumni placement networks to shield students from campus recruitment woes of this magnitude.

The Oracle job cuts could have brought this crisis to a head, but the general Indian campus placements crisis has been festering for a while. Those who are able to change quickly, develop skills, networks and backup plans will be in much better shape to survive what is still an uncertain market.
