The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has welcomed Syria back as a member state. OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha called the decision historic. He said it shows strong support for the Syrian people during a difficult time.
The decision was made at the 20th Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah on March 7, 2025. Taha explained that Syria’s return will help the country move toward a peaceful and secure political transition. He added that this step will help restore Syria’s institutions, protect its borders, and improve its standing among nations.
At the same meeting, diplomats also discussed the ongoing actions against the Palestinian people by Israel. They spoke about the need to address these concerns and to stand up for the rights of Palestinians.
Syria was suspended from the OIC in 2012 when the civil war broke out. Member states were worried about the conflict and the impact it had on human rights and regional stability. Now, Syria’s reinstatement marks a shift in regional relations and a chance for new beginnings.
Taha said that the OIC is ready to work closely with Syria. He showed a positive attitude toward rebuilding the country. The organization now has 57 member states that work together on issues affecting the Muslim world.
