In an important speech in Parliament, Member of Parliament (MP) Louis Ng spoke up for the welfare of migrant workers in Singapore. These workers play a big role in our economy but often face difficult living situations. Ng’s words have given people hope that positive changes may happen soon.

Decent Housing: A Basic Need

One of Ng’s main concerns was about the living spaces for migrant workers. He asked the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) if they plan to ensure these workers get at least the same amount of space as our full-time national servicemen. Ng believes having a decent place to live is a basic human need, not a privilege. All people, including migrant workers, should have access to proper housing.

Safe and Healthy Food

Apart from housing, Ng also talked about the food provided in dormitories where migrant workers stay. He wanted to know if the food meets safety standards and is good for their health. Having access to safe and nutritious food is very important for everyone’s well-being. Ng’s questions showed that the overall living conditions, including food quality, need to be improved.

Stopping Exploitation and Protecting Whistleblowers

Ng spoke strongly against employment kickback offences, where employers force workers to give back part of their salary. He suggested that the penalties for this should be as serious as those for corruption. This would send a clear message that exploiting workers is unacceptable. Ng also said that whistleblowers, who report wrongdoings, need to be protected from any harm or retaliation.

A Call for Dignity and Fairness

Ng’s words in Parliament were a powerful call for dignity and fairness for migrant workers. His questions were about more than just policies; they were about Singapore’s commitment to human rights and treating everyone with respect, no matter where they come from.

As people in Singapore wait to see how MOM will respond, there is hope that Ng’s appeal will lead to real improvements in the lives of migrant workers. This is an important moment, not just for Singapore, but for the way migrant workers are treated around the world.

Ng’s advocacy shows that Singapore is serious about progress and justice. As the discussions continue, people hope that his call for better living conditions and stronger legal protections will result in positive changes. Migrant workers, who contribute so much to our nation’s success, deserve to be treated fairly and have a good quality of life.
