‘Long list of crimes against women’ in Colombia’s conflict

In a huge blow to women rights, several women have faced sexual, gender and reproductive violence in Colombia during the conflict. Long list of crimes against women in Colombia’s armed conflict have shocked the world. 

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) tribunal, which is divided into three judicial chambers

and four sections of the Tribunal for Peace, said on Wednesday that at least 35,178 people suffered sexual violence in Colombia.

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) tribunal also opened an investigation on the whole matter. The investigators will investigate gender and reproductive violence in Colombia.

What did the judge say?

Colombian judge Lily Rueda Guzman condemned violence against women in the country. She reportedly said, “The court finds that acts of gender violence and prejudice occurred during the armed conflict when perpetrators abused the control afforded to them by weapons and the exercise of armed power to select victims and commit the crimes.”

Violence against women and girls in Colombia has seen a major increase during the armed conflict in Colombia.

Crime against women in Colombia’s conflict

According to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), women, girls and people with diverse sexual orientations faced sexual violence during the conflict. Women were the most affected during Colombia’s conflict.

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) said that the right-wing paramilitary groups and armed forces committed crime against women. The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) said in an analysis that the right-wing paramilitary groups committed 33% of crimes. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and members of the security forces also committed crimes against women.

‘Long list of crimes against women’

The right-wing paramilitary groups and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and members of the security forces committed various crimes against women and children. Some victims also suffered sexual violence.

Reportedly, 90% of victims were women and children. They were born between 1957 and 2016. The tribunal also said that 35% of people were children or adolescents when the crimes happened during the conflict.

Tribunal to investigate gender war crimes

The tribunal has opened an investigation into gender-related crimes. The authorities would investigate gender-based hate crimes committed by the military and the FARC against women and children.
