Story Behind Labour Day
The story of Labour Day begins in the late nineteenth century in the United States, when workers demanded an eight-hour workday. On May 1, 1886, a nationwide strike occurred. What started out as a peaceful meeting in Chicago’s Haymarket Square became increasingly brutal after someone threw a bomb into the crowd. This incident, later dubbed the Haymarket Affair, resulted in the deaths of seven police officers and four civilians.
Despite the great tragedy, it became a symbol of labour struggle everywhere. Since then, May 1 has been kept as a day to promote workers’ rights and the improvement of work conditions.
