Indian Embassy: India provides INR 96 crore as post-earthquake assistance to Nepal

The Deputy Chief of Mission at Indian Embassy, Namgyal Khampa handed over a cheque of INR 96 crore or 1.54 billion Nepalese Rupees to Shishir Kumar Dhungana, Secretary at Nepal’s Ministry of Finance. The Indian Embassy in Nepal said that the monetary help is an extension of India’s commitment for providing assistance and rehabilitation after Nepal was rocked with catastrophic earthquake in 2015. The earthquake led to death of over 9000 people in Nepal.

The financial support is provided for housing and assistance for schools and is to further assist in renovating educational institutions and houses of people affected in the earthquake. The Indian Embassy released statement saying,

“The Government of India has provided 1.54 billion Nepali Rupees to Nepal further fulfilling its commitment towards post-earthquake reconstruction assistance.” Statement further added, “India has expressed commitment to help rebuild 50,000 private houses in Gorkha and Nuwakot districts, which were destroyed due to the 2015 great earthquake. Of them, 92% construction works have already been completed.”

India has also partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Office for Project Services for aiding socio-economically to ensure home owners are able to rebuild their homes as per Nepal government’s earthquake-resilient norms.

In February 2016 India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for grant of $100-million which would support the reconstruction of 50,000 private houses in the two affected districts Gorkha and Nuwakot of Nepal.
