ANTANANARIVO: According to the island nation’s maritime authorities, at least 22 migrants died when their boat capsized off the coast of Madagascar over the weekend.

“47 people had secretly boarded a boat bound for (the French territory of) Mayotte, but it sank,” the Madagascar maritime authority APMF said in a statement.

“Twenty-three of the passengers were rescued. There were 22 bodies discovered “It added that the accident happened on Saturday and that search-and-rescue operations for the two people who remained missing were ongoing.

Every year, a large number of migrants attempt to reach the French territory of Mayotte, which is located in the Indian Ocean north of Madagascar.

According to French authorities, more than 6,500 people were detained in 2021 while attempting to enter the territory illegally.
