G7 to Launch Action Plan on AI’s Impact on Employment

The leaders of Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and European Union declared their commitment to launching an action plan addressing the positive and negative impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on employment at the recent G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy. This step highlights the global recognition of AI’s transformative power and the necessity of managing its implications on the workforce.

Positive and Negative Impact of AI on Labor

Positive Impacts

    Increased Productivity: AI technologies can evidently maximize efficiency by automating routine tasks, allowing human workers to focus on more complex and creative work.

Job Creation: AI’s incorporation can lead to the emergence of new job roles and sectors, notably in tech driven fields like AI development, maintenance and ethical compliance.

Enhanced Work Quality: AI can improve work quality by assisting in decision making processes, reducing errors and enhancing overall efficiency.

Negative Impacts

Job Displacement: The automation of tasks traditionally performed by humans could lead to losses, especially in sectors where repetitive tasks are prevalent.

Skills Gap: The rapid advancement of AI requires a workforce proficient in new technologies, potentially leaving behind those without relevant skills.

Economic Inequality: AI adoption might aggravate economic inequalities if benefits are unevenly distributed, favoring more technologically advanced regions and industries.

G7 Session on Artificial Intelligence and Energy

Leaders discussed AI’s dual role in driving economic growth and presenting employment challenges during the G7 Session on artificial intelligence and energy. They focused on the need for balanced policies that nurture innovation while protecting workers. AI’s potential to revolutionize the energy sector was also underscored, with discussions on using AI for optimizing renewable energy resources and improving energy efficiency.

G7 to Launch Action Plan Over AI Impact on Employment

The G7 leaders have committed to ensuring that AI technology leads to “increased productivity, quality jobs and decent work.” To attain this, they plan to strengthen labor market policies to lessen AI’s negative impacts. The action plan will focus on:

Labor Market Policies:  Executing strategies to protect workers from job displacement and to support retraining and upskilling initiatives.

Inclusive Growth: Ensuring that the benefits of AI Driven productivity improvement are widely shared, reducing economic disparities.

Ethical AI Deployment: Promoting the development and use of AI technologies that align with democratic values and ethical standards.

Introduction to Hiroshima AI Process

The Hiroshima AI Process (HAP) established at last year’s G7 Summit in Japan, aims to create international guidelines for trustworthy AI. Over 50 countries and regions have endorsed this framework, reflecting a global commitment to responsible AI governance. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida explained the importance of continuing international cooperation on AI during the G7 discussions.

   The HAP aims to establish trustworthy AI technical standards at the international level and to nurture fair use of AI. This initiative is closely connected with organizations such as the Organisation for Economic Co- Operation and Development (OECD) and the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI). The HAP was concluded in December 2023, marking a significant step towards regulating AI globally.

As AI continues to evolve and upgrade, the G7’s proactive approach sets an antecedent for responsible and fair use of technology, prioritizing data privacy, security and integrity. This strategy aims to nurture innovation while safeguarding the workforce, ensuring that AI’s benefits are widely shared and its hardships effectively managed.
