From Awareness to Action: How Europe Is Redefining Its Fight Against Extremism

A new European campaign points to a decisive movement in the European attitude towards the Muslim Brotherhood and its ideological followers, spearheaded by the Members of European Parliament (MEP) Nicolas Bay. His recent remarks demand concerted effort to combat political Islam, Hamas, ISIS and the Brotherhood as they constitute an integrated extremist ecosystem that poses a challenge to the stability of democracy. The campaign lays emphasis on the increased consciousness of Europe that fighting extremism needs not only the involvement of violent organizations but also intellectual movements that manipulate religion to pursue political interests. It also highlights how Europe has sided with world allies in fighting off radical ideologies that pose a threat to international peace.

Europe’s Shift: From Naivety to Clarity

The campaign is a turning point in how Europe understands political Islam. Having been torn apart, European discourse now tends to consider the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, and ISIS as the modification of the identical movement, in ideology. The fact that the time of distancing the moderate Islamists and the violent extremists has passed is emphasized by Nicolas Bay who stood firm on this point. His view is representative of an institutional wakeup in the European Parliament, and other EU establishments, of policymakers reconsidering the association with NGOs, and organizations associated with extremist interests. Europe is on a path to a commonplace where political Islam is defined as the root cause where extremism of violence thrives.

Shared Global Responsibility and Public Engagement

The campaign places the new clarity of Europe in a wider international agreement between Middle East states. The two regions have now realized that the ideological project of the Brotherhood bodes against peace and coexistence. The advocacy by Bay focuses on stating that as long as Europe remains alert to the infiltration by extremists, democracy, harmony and pluralism would be maintained in the society. The campaign will target both policy makers and citizens by establishing bilingual communication in both English and Arabic so as to escalate awareness of Islamic activities through civil activism as a pretext to expand ideology. As a means to uphold Europe values, Europe works towards being transparent and unified and to ensure world stability.
