Cardiff University plans major job cuts amid funding shortfall

The prestigious Cardiff University in the UK is planning to cut 400 full-time jobs as a funding shortfall persists. The proposals could include school and subject closures and school mergers, according to a report in BBC.

The Cardiff University and College Union (UCU) has described these layoffs as “cruel and unnecessary” and stressed that it is going to oppose plans for compulsory redundancies. The institution said it shall only make compulsory redundancies if necessary.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Larner said Cardiff University needed to take the difficult decision because of declining international student applications and increasing cost pressures. The 400 jobs equate to 7% of the total staff size.
