Workers Seek Reopening of Ringer’s Lactate Factory After Shutdown West Bengal

The workers at Paschimbanga Pharmaceuticals asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to restart the shuttered IV fluids manufacturing plant in North Dinajpur’s Chopra block. A tragedy caused the factory closure because 300 workers lost their jobs after one of the company’s intravenous fluid treatments killed a breastfeeding mother in Midnapore.

On Friday the members delivered petitions to their local Block Development Officer (BDO), district magistrate and local MLA. According to Inttuc Chopra block president Sirajul Haque, the swift factory shutdown now forces 300 workers to look after their families. A December 11 order from both Karnataka’s drug control department and Bengal’s drug control authorities led to factory halts which placed countless workers in an unfavorable financial position.

When quality control problems occur at pharmaceutical manufacturing sites workers encounter challenging safety problems which result in crucial human and financial risks.
