wga to evaluate new labor proposal from hollywood studios
Striking Hollywood writers are considering a new labor proposal from studios after a three-month standoff.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) received this counterproposal from the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP), representing the studios.
The union will review the offer and respond next week after careful consideration. The strike began on May 2 when contract negotiations between writers and studios failed.
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) joined the strike in July. While evaluating the offer, the WGA encourages its members to continue picketing.
Progress is being made as the AMPTP and WGA plan to resume negotiations this week. Both parties are returning to the table after discussions about a new labor contract.
The AMPTP is preparing a formal response to the WGA’s proposals, including improved minimum rates, higher streaming residuals, and staffing requirements for writers’ rooms.
The AMPTP’s president, Carol Lombardini, personally initiated the request to restart negotiations. The WGA wants the AMPTP to address the workers’ concerns that triggered the strike and hopes for constructive responses.
The writers’ strike has led to studios reporting better-than-expected earnings in Q2 due to reduced expenses from not producing new projects.
The strike’s resolution is sought by industry figures like SAG AFTRA’s chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who emphasized the need for companies to return to the negotiating table.
Both unions look forward to productive talks that address workers’ demands. The WGA, supported by its members and allied unions, remains committed to securing a fair deal.
