US Tariffs Trigger Mass Layoffs in Canadian Steel Industry

The U.S. steel import restrictions force Canadian manufacturers to fire their steel and aluminum employees at work. The union leadership predicts growing job losses of their members due to recent layoffs based on their analysis of steel plant conditions.

Kin of manufacturing Algoma Steel cut 27 employees, while CEO Michael Garcia predicts further cuts if the company cannot find new Canadian clients. Scott Noseworthy, the shredder operator at Ivaco’s Canada Metal Processing Group, must worry about his current job status due to the changing economic climate. Noseworthy says Trump’s tariff policies paralyzed his entire business operation at a news conference that revealed how financial problems affect his ability to keep working.

The Canadian government responds to affected workers through better job protection and presents substantial help plans for companies. The Canadian prime minister Mark Carney made unemployment insurance start more quickly and trade groups demanded stronger help programs. The labor unions through Warren promote unemployment benefits and work training in Canadian economic struggles.
