UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expresses grave concern over Israel-Hezbollah tensions

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has raised serious concerns for the safety of civilians in southern Lebanon as an intense Israeli bombing campaign continues. Lt Gen Lázaro is emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation.

The Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL noted in a statement that any further escalation of the dangerous situation could have far-reaching and devastating consequences, not only for those living on both sides of the Blue Line but also for the broader region.

Efforts are ongoing to reduce tensions and halt the shelling. UNIFIL reiterates its strong call for a diplomatic solution and urges all parties to prioritize civilian lives, stressing: “It is essential to fully recommit to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”

Israel and Hezbollah urged to prevent further escalation

Israeli air strikes on Lebanon killed at least 492 people on Monday, including 35 children, according to the health ministry there, marking the deadliest day of cross-border attacks since the beginning of the brutal Gaza crisis on October 7.

Israel claimed it killed a number of Hezbollah fighters as it hit about 1,600 sites in Lebanon, including a targeted strike in the capital Beirut, as per media reports. The ongoing Israel-Hamas fighting has brought in Hezbollah and other allegedly Iran-backed groups.

Hezbollah also noted that it had launched several missiles at Israeli military sites. People in Israel’s coastal city of Haifa have been seen running for cover as air raid sirens sounded. Global leaders have urged Israel and Hezbollah to step back from further escalation.
