Guide: Switching from UK Student Visa to Skilled Worker Before the £38k “New Entrant” Cap Expires

International students in the UK face a critical window to secure long-term employment under the Skilled Worker Visa route. The average wage at which an experienced worker may receive a salary is now 38,700, but new graduates are now afforded much lower rate since they are termed as New Entrants which is usually 70 percent of the current job rate (or a lower limit of about 30,960). This discount is however not long-term. It is quite time-bound, which poses a use it or lose situation. Understanding when your eligibility for this lower salary band expires is crucial for transitioning from a UK Student Visa to a professional role without facing the steep £38k financial barrier immediately.

Maximizing the New Entrant Salary Benefit

The primary advantage of switching directly from a UK Student Visa is the ability to be sponsored at a lower salary. This will put you in a better position to employers who might be reluctant to remunerate an entry-level position in the full experienced rate. To be eligible, you have to be less than 26, a recent graduate or are in professional training. This status is a practical postponement of the need to reach the mark of 38700, which will allow you time to advance your career and earn more by default.

The 4-Year Clock: The Ultimate Countdown.

Crucially, the New Entrant Salary status is capped at a maximum of four years. This period covers any duration in a Graduate Visa. After four years using this four year clock, you will have to make a full salary payment of the experienced rate to renew your visa. Strategic planning is essential; switching to a Skilled Worker Visa early ensures you utilize this discount effectively before the “cap expires” and the higher wage requirements kick in.
