Trump Administration Cuts 1,000 National Park Service Jobs Amid Efforts to Shrink Government
Trump administration has terminated about 1,000 newly hired National Park Service workers who were tasked with park upkeep, educating visitors, and other vital work. This is all done in the pursuit of a more general effort to shrink the size of government. While the terminations weren’t made public, Democratic senators and House members validated them. This is in line with a wide-ranging program of slashing thousands of federal positions, spearheaded by Elon Musk and the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, under Trump’s budget plan to decrease federal expenditure.
In a surprise move, the National Park Service subsequently said it would restore 5,000 seasonal jobs that were cut last month because of a spending freeze ordered by President Trump. These seasonal employees are needed in the summer to cope with the more than 325 million visitors to the country’s 428 parks and historic sites annually.
Staff cuts in national parks have raised many eyebrows, with advocates warning of understaffed sites, shorter hours, and less service. That could mean popular parks are left with litter, dirty restrooms, and failure to do simple maintenance, putting public safety at risk. Kristen Brengel of NPCA says cuts by the Trump administration are forcing an already overworked Park Service into the crisis zone.
Some jobs were eliminated in some parks, including Grand Teton in Wyoming; and in Shenandoah in Virginia, public safety may be threatened by staff shortages on trails. Consequently, seasonal employees, being critical to the parks’ functioning, will also be cut.
Things have gotten worse owing to a freeze for parks in project funding which gives them morale-boosting projects. These cuts threaten local businesses and tourism, which contribute billions to the economy, while the stakes are significantly high for the parks and surrounding communities.
