top ukrainian politician proposes donald trump for nobel peace prize
Oleksandr Merezhko, a top Member of Parliament from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, has nominated US President-elect Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, according to a letter to the committee.
It is his belief that Trump has made substantial contributions to global peace and that he can make more in the future, Merezhko noted in his letter seen by the Kyiv Independent on Tuesday. But not everyone has the same opinion.
Many opinion leaders in Ukraine have criticised Trump for questioning further US assistance to Ukraine. He has also promised to broker a peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine crisis, and there is speculation that he could pressure Kyiv to agree to Putin’s terms.
Donald Trump laid the foundations for today’s international coalition of support for Ukraine by demonstrating global leadership in supplying ammunition to resist Russia’s aggression, Oleksandr Merezhko further mentioned.
In response to a question about his motivation for the nomination, the Ukrainian politician said that he seeks to use it as an opportunity to attract the US President-elect’s attention so that he could help Ukraine survive.
In his nomination letter, Merezhko said that Trump could help Ukraine achieve “just, comprehensive and sustainable peace“. On the campaign trail, Trump promised to negotiate a deal “that is good for both sides,” if elected.
