The Telangana government’s innovative effort will be etched in history as a landmark day for the welfare of workers as on this day, an accident insurance coverage scheme of INR 1 crore has been launched for the electricity department employees.
Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu launched the Lottery Scheme, a scheme beneficial to the contract workmen in the electricity department, on 26th May, 2025, at the Praja Bhavan, where the Prime Minister paid an INR 1 crore insurance cheque to the family of late Jogun Naresh, an electricity worker who sadly died while working with Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (NPDCL) during duty hours. Naresh’s wife also received a compassionate appointment in the department, which demonstrates the commitment of the government to help families in the unfortunate situation.
Deputy CM Vikramarka explained that the most historic welfare initiative can happen with a leader like Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the Indiramma government. He reiterated that no other government had a chance to be as transformative and compassionate toward workers’ welfare by initiating such a bold, proactive, humane and labour-friendly government.
The accident insurance scheme began as a pilot program for Singareni workers and has now been expanded to the electricity sector. The scheme will provide financial security and compensation support for frontline workers and their families. Deputy CM Vikramarka appreciated NPDCL CMD Varun Reddy for showcasing the implementation of the scheme and urged electricity employees to dedicate themselves to serving the public and provide confidence in the government standing behind them.
This scheme sets a nationwide standard with regards to workers’ welfare as Telangana becomes the first state in India to offer high-value accident insurance for workers in the power sector. Trade unions, employee welfare associations and indeed citizens were generally appreciative of the progressive approach to worker safety.
