South Africa is in the process of implementing a mandatory digital visa system in September of 2025, a historic reform for how visitors enter South Africa. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber recently announced that the new process would occur through the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It would be fully digital, no paper, no big queues.

What Is the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

The ETA will be required for all people visiting South Africa, starting with those traveling by air at OR Tambo and Cape Town International Airport. The technology automates visa processing through AI and other up-to-date technology, using advanced security techniques.

Who Will Be Affected?

It is designed to start with air travelers but provide it quickly for other ports and visa types as they’re made legislative. Tourists, business travelers and skilled workers must all now apply digitally before arriving in South Africa.

How Does It Improve Immigration and Tourism?

The ETA accompanies both the very successful Trusted Tour Operator and Trusted Employer Schemes that simplified visas for more than 17,000 tourists, and brought hundreds of skilled workers such as software and nuclear engineers. These two schemes have assisted in creating 1,230 jobs and stimulated the economy.

What Are the Long-Term Benefits?

The digital visa intends to decrease fraud, fight corruption and streamline skilled immigration. South Africa continues to bolster tourism and attract global talent, with 71 companies utilizing the Trusted Employer Scheme and 45 new tour operators added.

The ETA system rollout will require travelers to stay current with requirements. This initiative can serve a bold, new signal and is part of South Africa’s continuing progressive adoption of digital advancement and global competitiveness.
