Singapore Hosts Largest ‘Thank You’ Feast for Migrant Workers

As a moving tribute to the migrant workers that have been a part of Singapore’s development, over 60,000 meals were distributed across the island as part of Singapore’s largest single day food distribution drive. This community engagement initiative, organized as a collaboration between the Indian Restaurants Association Singapore (IRAS) and as a joint effort with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) was commemorating Labour Day and also Singapore’s 60th year of independence (SG60).

There were a total of 60 plus restaurants who worked very hard to put together a huge project, consisting of vegetarian, non-vegetarian and oriental meals. The meals were distributed in 28 dormitories, 5 recreation centres, several places of worship and Birch Road in Little India where 15,000 meals were distributed alone. The space was transformed into a community venue with live cultural performances and interactive activities.

Over 160 volunteers from Millenia Institute, Peirce Secondary School, community groups and government agencies got together for this heartwarming initiative. The guest of honour and Minister for Manpower, Tan See Leng joined the celebration with migrant workers and volunteers for a communal meal and expressed his deep gratitude for their sacrifices.

“Labour Day is a day to celebrate the dedication, determination, and hard work of workers in all fields,’Dr. Tan remarked. “Your efforts in building our homes, maintaining our infrastructure and providing the services that keep our city moving forward cannot be valued.”

Planning for the event began in February, while participating restaurants began meal preparations as early as 4 a.m. on the day of the event. Dr Tan reflected on the efforts of the participants, calling it “a tall order, but delivered with heart and a sprinkle of delicious purpose.”

This celebration was a special thank you to the migrant workforce in Singapore, the quiet contributors to continual nations’ progress.
