In the current workaholic society, employers are at times flouting labor laws unobtrusively. Early detection of the minor infractions safeguards your rights and health. The following are five red flags.
1. Unpaid Overtime Despite Long Hours
Working hours more than 40 hours a week and not being overtime compensated at 1.5x your regular pay (under U.S. FLSA), it will probably be deemed illegal. There are exemptions on salaried pros, yet regular off-the-clock requests are indicative of trouble.
2. No Meal or Rest Breaks
The federal law requires non-exempt employees to have breaks, depending on the state- e.g., California 30 minutes non-paid lunch with a minimum of 5 hours shift. Missing them without saying is eating away your health and rights.

3. Misclassification as an Independent Contractor
Said that you are a contractor but are managed like an employee (have set hours, tools supplied)? This evades tax and benefits. True status is usually shown by IRS 20-factor test.
4. Withheld Wages or Delayed Paychecks
Late paychecks or deductions made without their consent are against the law such as the FLSA. It is little things that make a lot–demand transparency.
5. Unsafe Conditions Ignored
OSHA demands safe working places. Endless complaints such as broken equipment that has not been repaired are also indicative of negligence of the employer.
