Prince Harry Faces Backlash as His Charity Admits Human Rights Abuse

Prince Harry’s links to African charitable groups have come under considerable scrutiny after revelations of human rights abuses and internal controversies.

African Parks Admits to Human Rights Violations:

African Parks which is a conservation non-governmental organization (NGO) has Prince Harry on its board of directors and he was the president from 2017 until 2023. African Parks now admits that park rangers committed egregious human rights abuses in Odzala-Kokoua National Park (Republic of Congo) as documented in an independent investigation. Omnia Strategy LLP found evidence of rape, torture and forced displacement of the indigenous Baka peoples, particularly the during the first few years of African Parks management.

While their regret was sincere African Parks did not publicly reveal the complete results of the investigation provoking criticism from rights organizations like Survival International. African Parks has committed to making changes which includes hiring an anthropologist to assist the Baka community and work with local rights organizations.

Sentebale Faces Internal Turmoil:

Additionally, Sentebale which was a charity founded in 2006 by Prince Harry to help children affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana is under investigation by the UK’s Charity Commission whose investigation includes allegations of racism, bullying, and financial mismanagement by the charity. The Chairwoman Dr. Sophie Chandauka alleged abuse and bullying by Prince Harry and fellow trustees, so the entire board including Prince Harry resigned in a single event.

Internal tensions have raised questions about accountability and governance in the charity. Harry has remained silent on the allegations but has said he hopes the investigation by the Charity Commission will get to the truth.

Implications for Prince Harry’s Philanthropic Image:

These events have now put a damper on Prince Harry’s charitable work in Africa. The acknowledged human rights violations by African Parks, and the internal conflict in Sentebale dilute the efficiency and oversight of the charities he supports. Lastly as members of the public and assurers await more information, it is clear that the more he engages in philanthropy, the more transparency and accountability are required of him in humanitarian work.

Prince Harry’s response to these challenges will be closely watched as he navigates the complexities of leadership and responsibility in the charitable sector.
