It can be difficult for the blue collar population of India like daily wage earners, laborers and lower income employees to find safe and affordable housing. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a government scheme designed to solve this problem by providing financial assistance towards homeownership. Specifically, here is what you need to be aware of about the scheme as a worker.

What is the PMAY Scheme?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) commenced in 2015 (now extended) aims to achieve “Housing for All”. The PMAY provides interest subsidies to economically weaker sections (EWS), low income groups (LIG) and middle income groups (MIG) to promote acquisition by purchasing or constructing, or improving house or dwelling-plus.

The scheme is divided into two parts

  • PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U) for city and town dwellers.
  • PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G) for rural residents.

Eligibility Criteria for Workers

  • To apply under PMAY workers must meet the following criteria
  • Income Limits
    • EWS: Up to INR 3 lakh per year.
    • LIG: INR 3-6 lakh per year.
    • MIG-I: INR 6-12 lakh per year.
    • MIG-II: INR 12-18 lakh per year.
  • The applicant or family must not own a pucca (permanent) house anywhere in India.
  • The beneficiary must not have received any housing assistance from the government in the past.
  • Women’s ownership or co-ownership is required in EWS and LIG categories.
  • The applicant must hold a valid Aadhaar card.

Key Benefits of PMAY for Workers

  • Interest subsidy of 3% to 6.5% available under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS).
  • Financial assistance of up to INR 1.2 Lakh under PMAY-G to build a new house in rural areas.
  • Cheap monthly EMIs due to low interest rates.
  • Positive encouragement for female home ownership.
  • Availability of safe, clean housing, improving standard of living.

How to Apply for PMAY?

  • Apply Online
  • Go to official PMAY site: pmaymis.gov.in
  • Click on Citizen Assessment and select the option of your choice.
  • You will need to fill in data like Aadhaar number, personal information and income.
  • Submit and download the acknowledgement of the application.
  • You may have to submit an application in person and download your acknowledgement.

Offline Application Process:

In order to apply for PMAY offline, you can go to your local Common Service Center (CSC) or urban local body office, where you will be able to fill out the PMAY application with the assistance of staff. You will need to carry the same documentation you would if you were applying online such as your Aadhaar card along with proof of income and identity.

Once completed, application forms as well as documents can be handed in and you will also have to pay a nominal application fee which is around INR 25. This offline way of application helps individuals who do not have or cannot use the internet to also benefit.

PMAY is helping millions realize secure, dignified homes, by making affordable housing a reality for India’s workers. No matter if it is a city or village with PMAY you can now begin a journey towards stability and self-reliance.
