Morrisons Announces Store Closures, Job Cuts, and Service Reductions Amid Restructuring

Seventeen closures of convenience stores, 52 cafes, and much more than 100 other in-store services have been inaugurated by Morrissons  during these months; the firm will close 18 market kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters, and four pharmacies across 18 sites.

He wants to ensure that revitalising the brand is done by the company to embrace investment in what is really relevant for customers, capable of growing the Mall in the long-term view. Morrisons shall keep the Cafes running because they have been mostly shut down in their communities, losing quite an important role within those communities, with their great food thriving in some localities, although the closure was unavoidable due to certain localized challenges.

“But when it comes to market street, it’s a big part of Morrisons’ proposition and we’re very much committed to it,” he stressed, stating that Morrisons is continuing to build differentiation into high-quality service within stores.

These changes will lead to 396 job losses. However, top officials of the company promised that most of the impacted employees will be absorbed within the organization.

As such, along with the 17 stores, Morrisons Daily, which aims at localized and convenience extension hours, will also be formed in the restructuring. Morrisons runs approximately 1,600 of these smaller stores alongside nearly 500 larger supermarkets. It is noteworthy that these closures were a reaction towards significant increase of cost as the least valued for customers have been identified among those stores, counters, and services that were shut down.
