Meta Platforms has officially initiated a major workforce reduction, eliminating approximately 1,500 positions within its Reality Labs division as of January 2026. This cut affects roughly 10% of the unit’s 15,000-strong workforce, signaling a definitive strategic pivot away from broad metaverse development toward commercially surging AI Smart Glasses. These directions were confirmed by the CTO Andrew Bosworth in an internal memo, which argued that the division needed to reduce its cumulative losses of $70 billion and instead focus on the success of wearable technology. The reorganization focuses on Ray-Ban Meta, that is experiencing unanticipated consumer demand, as opposed to slower-growing virtual reality hardware initiatives.
Reality Labs Restructures for Efficiency
The reduction targets specific teams within Reality Labs focused on experimental VR hardware and legacy software. Management emphasized that resources are being reallocated to support the accelerated roadmap for AI Smart Glasses, a sector where Meta sees an immediate competitive advantage. This turn should level the finances of this division, and the increasing interest of people in the use of AI in eyewear.
Employee Groups Reaction to AI Smart Glasses Shift
Internal morale has faced a sharp downturn, with employee groups and internal forums describing the sudden restructuring as “brutal” and chaotic. Skeptics say that the transparency of the pivot was doubted since high-performing talent was dismissed without prior notice.
