Malaysia Faces AI Job Transformation: 600,000 Positions at Risk

Artificial intelligence poses a crucial economic decision point for Malaysia because the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) predicts that 600,000 positions will disappear during the next three to five years. The most vulnerable positions for employment are clerical-administrative alongside manufacturing industries.

The co-founder of Juwai-IQI and its Chairperson Georg Chmiel describes how AI enables Southeast Asian GDP growth of $1 trillion which positions Malaysia as the driver for this economic transformation.

AI technology destroys current job vacancies but simultaneously generates brand new employment opportunities. The research conducted internationally demonstrates that AI technology will replace 85 million existing roles by establishing 97 million new positions so transition programs for labor forces become essential.

The Communications and Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo chose to implement AI transformation in Malaysia after determining the need to restructure workplace staffing. Experts emphasize several key priorities:

  • All organizations should develop basic competence in Artificial Intelligence systems.
  • Implementing comprehensive reskilling programs
  • Strategic job development should concentrate on creating positions which benefit from and assist AI systems.
