Major Restructuring Hits Federal Health Agencies as 10,000 Jobs Face Elimination

Federal health organizations started making staff cuts on Tuesday because the Trump administration wants to cut 10,000 full-time HHS positions. The Department of Government Efficiency under Elon Musk launched its reduction program last Thursday to decrease the 82,000 federal employees by 25% across all HHS departments like CDC, FDA and NIH.

Implementing the data checks took longer than expected last Friday when exactly the notices should have gone to employees according to source. Many employees continued to feel worried about their job standing because official notification about layoffs was delayed through the weekend.

Departments experiencing significant cuts include those focused on:

HIV prevention and treatment

Minority health initiatives

Injury prevention, including gun violence programs

Drug approval processes

Health insurance administration

Infectious disease response

The organizational revamp eliminated several important officials. Dr. FDA chief vaccine regulator Peter Marks left his post on Friday while remaining a part of the FDA.
