For numerous decades, celebrities across the globe have joined the fight to protect Earth’s ecosystems, using their influence to demand urgent action. Stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett and Heidi Klum have consistently spoken out on issues.

But this trend has not escaped controversies. Many celebrities have faced criticism for hypocrisy – for flying on private jets or using fuel-guzzling cars and simultaneously campaigning against carbon emissions.

These contradictions can reduce the strength of the message. But some celebrities have noted their long-term dedication to the cause. One of the most prominent voices in this space is Leonardo DiCaprio, reputed for his role as Jack in Titanic.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s journey as a climate champion

1. Just a year after Titanic made him a global sensation, DiCaprio founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) in 1998. The organisation has funded a number of conservation projects, including protecting tigers in Nepal and black rhinos in Tanzania.

2. In 2016, the actor produced and narrated ‘Before the Flood’, a hard-hitting documentary that sheds light on the climate crisis.

3. The same year, Leonardo DiCaprio attended the historic Paris climate conference. During the summit, countries across the globe agreed to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels – as stated by the Paris agreement.

4. DiCaprio has also been using public speeches and social media to bring attention to climate action. He is seeking to educate and mobilize.
