Korea Launches Special Shipbuilding Training Program for Uzbek Workers

Korea is developing a unique training program to train Uzbek workers for shipbuilding jobs in its country. Before they arrive at shipbuilding companies in Ulsan this year 280 workers will undergo training in Uzbekistan.

Under a Ministry of Employment and Labor authorization, the training program aims to fill Korean labor gaps arising from weak birth rates. Workers who complete shipbuilding training in welding and painting will qualify for E-9 work visas to the country. The first group of trained workers will start their journey on March 18 and return to Korea in July 2025. The government will organize further sending groups throughout the year.

Ministry officials reported that the program serves all parties involved since technical instruction decreases workplace risk and enhances business output. These efforts help achieve Korea’s goal to welcome foreign workers during 2024. With 3.24 percent of employees but 15 percent of work deaths the authorities hope training will boost workplace safety.
