In the move to deepen cooperation between North Korea and Russia, Kim Jong Un has sent a large number of North Korean laborers to Russia. Effectively labeled it as a “gift” to Russian president Vladimir Putin. North Korean workers are being deployed in many industries, especially in construction, to reinforce Russia’s economy during the war in Ukraine.
How Does This Support Russia’s War Effort?
Russia will be able to supply uninterrupted labor through the North Korean worker pipeline which will be crucial in maintaining infrastructure and produced goods in those areas impacted by war and international sanctions. The labor force from North Korea is known for long working hours, discipline, and willingness to endure tough situations. Thereby playing sustainable roles in the domestic economy while resources are directed towards the military campaign.
Additionally, this arrangement enables Russia to compensate for its labor shortages resulting from the mobilization of Russian citizens for its war effort. Utilizing foreign workers to fill labor shortages allows Russia to continue necessary domestic projects without using manpower from the front lines.
Countries Supporting Russia in the Ukraine Conflict:
Several countries have sided with Russia by providing certain kinds of support in connection with the war in Ukraine. The most direct ally is Belarus, which has allowed Russian forces to operate from Belarusian territory and provided logistical support to those forces.
While China professes to be neutral, it also allegedly provides Russia with dual-use technologies and economic support to allow Russia to resist Western sanctions.
Iran has provided drones and other military equipment to augment its battlefield capacity. North Korea has not only sent workers but also allegedly supplied artillery shells and missiles, thereby entrenching its military partnership with Moscow.
In addition, both Syria and Venezuela have expressed public support of Russia’s actions, positioning themselves as political allies of the Kremlin. Together with Russia, these states play a crucial role in the suffering of innocent Ukrainian people.
