US President-elect Donald Trump has confirmed that his administration is going to declare a national emergency and use military assets in a mass deportation programme. On Monday, he gave an affirmative response to a netizen’s post on such reports.

Trump’s incoming border czar Tom Homan has emphasised that from Day 1 itself, the incoming administration is ready to prioritise public safety and national security to first deport 425,000 illegal immigrants holding criminal records.

Stressing that “legal immigrants are perfectly safe”, Homan noted that there are millions of deserving immigrants and asylum seekers pushed to the back of the line because of the invasion of illegals, according to a report in Times of India.

Mass deportations could trigger significant labour shocks

Illegal immigration, besides inflation and price rise, ruled the latest presidential election earlier this month. Donald Trump appears ready to make good on his mass deportation promise amid doubts about the feasibility of sending back millions of illegal immigrants.

Experts are concerned about the possibility of mass deportations triggering significant labour shocks across multiple key industries. The construction, agriculture and hospitality sector are expected to face the brunt of the potential impacts.

Nearly 14% of people employed in the US construction industry are estimated to be undocumented. Removing that labour is going to disrupt all forms of construction across the country, from homes to businesses to basic infrastructure.
