Another victim of the tide of corporate restructuring fueled by AI has surfaced. Groupon, the former discount e-commerce big dog, announced it has slashed its Groupon staff, in what it calls a “tough measure,” as it tries to become an “AI-native” company — a trend shared by many tech firms in 2026.
On May 21, 2026, Groupon submitted a Form 8-K to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stating that its board of directors has authorised a restructuring program that it calls “Project Foundry.” The plan involves eliminating up to 400 positions worldwide, including employees and contractors, which is anticipated to be achieved by the end of Q3 2026 (October).
Groupon’s proxy statement for April 2026 showed that it had about 1,734 employees. That would be a 23% cut in the employed population, if the total 400 cuts would impact only the employees. Groupon’s stock price surged upon the news; another bad sign that Wall Street is becoming more willing to reward companies that are replacing workers with automation.
This is not the first Groupon layoff in 2026. They come as part of a larger global trend of AI-induced job cuts.
Groupon’s shift is a trend showing up elsewhere: Businesses in various fields are scrambling to incorporate AI into their daily operations, and it’s doing so on the backs of human employees. New workforce automation trends indicate that jobs in customer support, data processing, content moderation and even mid-level management are becoming increasingly susceptible to AI job replacement.

Considering what happened with Groupon layoffs, it goes without saying that there isn’t anything absolutely certain about the impact of AI on career opportunities. The ones who see this as a chance to reinvent themselves rather than the beginning of the end will definitely find their chances after disruption.
