Google Tightens Remote Work Policy, Some Remote Employees Face Ultimatum

Google has made remote work limits stricter by telling its workers that office work is required or they could risk job loss. Many technology companies now return to workplace collaboration after relaxing these policies during COVID.

Multiple Google divisions now tell fully remote workers they need to switch to a hybrid schedule or take voluntary departure. This employer assists workers with moving expenses when they relocate their home to be within 50 miles of an office site.

Courtney Mencini from Google confirms that each work group decides how its employees will return to the office without company-wide guidelines. She acknowledged that team collaboration takes place best when staff work together in person since this approach leads to innovative problem solving.

The new work policy matches Google’s steps to reduce costs as the company grows its artificial intelligence tools. Google took these work changes after dismissing employees in 2023 and starting buyout deals for its US teams in 2025.

Among the most affected divisions:

  • People Operations (HR): Employees within 50 miles of an office must transition to hybrid work by June or risk job loss
  • Google Technical Services: Staff are being directed to relocate or consider exit options
